The Meridian Intersection and Pedestrian Safety (MIPS) Task Force was established in response to tragic pedestrian versus vehicle crashes that have occurred in the Meridian. These unfortunate incidents served as a catalyst for a collective call from elected officials at both ACHD and the City of Meridian to establish a task force dedicated to addressing safety concerns at major intersections and pedestrian crossings, with a particular focus on locations near schools. The task force will evaluate the user experience for non-vehicle travelers on bikes, scooters, walking, etc. Task force members recognize the importance of keeping our community safe and walkable through responsible transportation planning and enforcement practices. Pedestrians and other non-vehicle travelers have a right to use our roads without worrying about being struck by a vehicle.

The Task Force has held several meetings throughout April and May (and has weekly meetings scheduled) to continue reviewing individual signalized intersections throughout Meridian.

With the scope defined the work began with police and staff analysis throughout February and March. The group came together again to in April to review the analysis and begin reviewing individual intersections.

The task force held a kickoff meeting in February to define the scope of work and discuss the coordination efforts needed to accomplish a review of every major intersection in Meridian. Along with Meridian and ACHD staff other agencies represented included: Meridian Police (MPD), West Ada School District (WASD), and Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho (COMPASS).
