Project Overview

The enhanced crossing at Chinden Boulevard and 43rd Street is a federally funded project that would improve connectivity for people walking and biking between Boise’s West Bench neighborhoods, the Greenbelt, and surrounding areas. The crossing will also support travel along 43rd Street as a low-stress route and an alternative to Curtis Road and Veterans Memorial Parkway.

Several nearby destinations make this crossing especially important, including the Boys and Girls Club, Anser Charter School, and Future Public School. Garden City’s wineries, cafes, and restaurants north of Chinden Boulevard also draw people walking and biking from across the region.

Design Key Features

Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon

  • A signalized crossing location that stops both directions of vehicle traffic for people walking and biking to cross Chinden Boulevard
    • If you'd like to learn more, information on PHBs is available under "Project Exhibits".

Raised Median

  • Reduces conflicts between turning and crossing vehicles and other vehicles and people walking and biking
  • Provides a refuge for people walking and biking across Chinden Boulevard

Crosswalk Striping

  • High visibility striping to draw attention of motorists to potential crossing
  • Green paint for bike lane crossing that provides visibility and separates people walking and biking

Beginning Monday, 43rd Street will be closed northeast of the intersection. Commuters should use Adams Street as a detour (see detour map).

Chinden Boulevard will remain open with two lanes in each direction. The center turn lane will remain closed.

The current closure on 43rd Street southwest of the intersection will reopen before the northeast side closes.

43rd Street is expected to reopen by the end of May.

The work is part of ACHD’s Chinden Boulevard and 43rd Street Enhanced Crossing Project, which includes adding a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) and raised medians. The entire project is expected to wrap up this summer.
